general information & other news...
=======================================================
Polio Plus Society

What is the Polio Plus Society?
It is a Rotary fundraising and recognition program that specifically supports Polio eradication.

Why the eradication of Polio?
Rotary International is a founding member of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Polio is a paralysing and potentially deadly infectious disease. The virus spreads from person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can then attack the nervous system.

Isn’t Polio virtually eradicated anyway?
Whilst it remains endemic only in two countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyse as many as 200,000 children each year.

What is the commitment to become a member of the Polio Plus Society?
The commitment is $100US per year until Polio is eradicated worldwide.

Who can become members?
The general public including Rotarians and their friends.

How do you become a member?
  1. Go onto the 9810 District website, find the Donation Page and follow the prompts.
  2. Make the donation.
  3. Complete the Commitment Form and email David Grieve (davidgrieve.au@gmail.com).
If you would like a presentation via ZOOM at your Club meeting, please contact District Polio Co-Ordinator David Grieve preferably by email or on 0488 480402
Just a gentle reminder that the DG’s Partners Project which is to End Polio can be made in the normal manner (refer form here https://www.9810rotary.org.au/documents/en-au/9d5560f8-34b1-472f-8fdd-7216fe03d768/1). EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

Rotary Club of Springvale City is looking for people interested in travelling to Cambodia this year to witness our projects first hand and be interested in supporting our new projects in  the rural areas of Cambodia to educate the children for a better future and become leaders in their communities.

We will be travelling around September/October 2024 for 2-3 weeks which will include sightseeing with an informed guide (Seda Douglas) of areas within Cambodia you may not get to see normally.

Accommodation will be self contained units with kitchen ,laundry etc. so we don’t need to take luggage with us on our overnight trips. This will be in Phnom Penh and possibly Siem Reap.

Cost will be announced after numbers are decided and after Seda has been to Cambodia later this month.

SHELTERBOX AUSTRALIA KOKODA FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE 2024

I am participating in one of the world’s greatest treks, the 96km Kokoda Trek.
Since 2012 Shelterbox and Rotary have been official  Project Partners in disaster relief.

If you are not familiar with Shelterbox it has grown to become an Internationally recognized, independent disaster relief organization and we believe that shelter from the chaos of disaster and conflict is vital.

The equipment provided gives people the hope and the power to transform their own lives.

Since Shelterbox Australia began in 2000 it has responded to earthquakes, floods, volcanoes, tsunamis, hurricanes, landslides, typhoons and conflict. Shelter is so much more than just a roof. It’s the foundation for life, families and communities. It is a place to feel safe after days or weeks of fear. It offers protection from harsh weather, privacy and helps to preserve dignity, it’s a space to heal from trauma. People can stay connected and build resilience together.

The Shelter Kits contain the items that help transform shelter into a home, like cooking sets, solar lights and activity sets for children and much more.
Please see article in February 2024 Rotary Down Under headed ‘Thousands Asssited by Shelter Box Moroccan Deployment’

Shelterbox creates Fundraising Challenges for many walks they create throughout Australia and elsewhere. The target for this Kokoda walk is $3500 for each walker.
